SUB AQUATIC ART MUSEUM (MUSA)
In 2009 a monumental underwater contemporary museum of art called MUSA (Museo Subacuático de Arte) was formed in the waters surrounding Cancun, Isla Mujeres and Punta Nizuc. The project now consists of over 500 permanent life-size sculptures and is one of the largest and most ambitious underwater artificial art attractions in the world. The Museum aims to demonstrate the interaction between art and environmental science and form part of a complex reef structure for marine life to colonize and inhabit whilst increasing biomass on a grand scale. All of the sculptures are fixed to the seabed and made from specialized materials used to promote coral life. The total installations occupy an area of over 420sq meters of barren substrate and weighing in at over 200 tons.
Scuba Diving has become one of the most popular activities for our visitors in recent years. We use the first Diving University in Mexico with SDI certified instructors based in Cancun. With a 2 hours lesson you will be ready to make your first dive in the MUSA “EVOLUCION SILENCIOSA, which is considered to be the best place to make a first diving submersion in Mexico.
Lessons schedule: 10:00 hrs. Scuba Diving Schedule Musa: 14:00 hrs.
This 4-hour tour provides you with two snorkel experience first at the MUSA where you will also see the schools of fish, turtles, rays etc. After this, subject to timing and weather conditions, we will stop off at a second site which is full of marine life. El Farito is a famous snorkel area just off the coast of Isla Mujeres where you will enjoy a 20-minute visit; the perfect way to round off your MUSA experience.
The sculptures that you could see in this Museum include; The Cross of the Bay, Man on Fire, Dream Collector, El Bacab, Antropocene (VW Car), Silent Evolution (450 statues), Thing Blue (Beetle Car) and The Promise. We will do our utmost to make sure you see the majority (weather and visibility permitting). This ever changing environment alters the appearance of the statues constantly, the sculptures require algae to provide a base for the fragile coral as well as food for the fish. Some of the sculptures are already showing coral growth and we look forward to more in the near future.
Most of these models were locals from Puerto Morelos, a nearby fishing village to the south of Cancun. A 5 year old boy sat for over an hour whilst he was covered with marine cement, other statues were made from a pregnant lady, a nun, a local fisherman as well as a model and a famous British TV presenter. Today these eerie statues are covered with algae and polyps of Coral, the plan worked and Cancun is now home to the biggest artificial reef in the world.

The idea was to create an artificial reef featuring sculptures made from marine concrete. First algae forms on the underwater statues and then the tiny polyps begin to grow. Some of the figures are now covered with algae and others have some beautiful reef formations making the facial features distorted and eerie looking. The underwater museum Cancun is one of a kind.
Our 2 tank 28ft MUSA dive will take you to the main part of the Cancun museum known as the Silent Evolution.
There are 450 statues here and their eye formation is as such in order to protect the statues and of course the marine life and coral from increment weather conditions. The statues were made and placed with only two things in mind – conserving our existing natural reefs of Cancun and providing new havens for fish and sea life.
At the same time Cancun diving just got more interesting and this is not to be missed during your vacation.
Other statues from the museum in Cancun that can be seen during this dive are Anthropocene (a life sized VW Beetle car), The Bankers, Urban Reef, Bio Map, Bacab and Timebomb.
